World Human Rights Moot Court Competition

The 5th World Human Rights Moot Court Competition will be held at the University of Pretoria, South Africa from 7-10 December 2013

Every university in the world is invited to present a team of two students – preferably one woman and one man – to the 5th World Human Rights Moot Court Competition which will be held in Pretoria from 7 to 10 December 2013. The universities first have to submit memorials on the basis the hypothetical case. The first selection of Universities will be on the basis of written memorials.

The memorials will be evaluated by a team of eminent human rights experts. The best 15 teams from the 5 UN regions will be selected to attend the final rounds in Pretoria in December.

Hypothetical Problem

The hypothetical problem focuses on human rights issues and is based on the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other applicable human rights instruments. The official language of the Competition is English.

About the Competition

The Competition is open to undergraduate students from all institutions of tertiary education in the world. Participation in the competition is not restricted to law students, but it is expected that in most cases the teams participating in this event will be comprised of students who study law.

The final is organised on 10 December, the day of the Celebration of the Human Rights Day. The World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is organised in partnership with the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Southern Africa (ROSA).
